The Visitor Information Centre is housed in the Tambo Library located in the Heritage Precint of the main street of Tambo. Call in and chat to the friendly staff and pick up your brochures and maps so you can enjoy the self-guided tours Tambo offers.
If you enjoy nature then try the self-guided Coolibah Walk. This bush walk meanders along the banks of the Barcoo River. There is a large variety of bird life to be sighted, and often kangaroos resting in the shade or returning from their night of grazing. A small detour on the walk will take you to the Qantas crash sight which resulted in three fatalities, Allan Davidson (pilot), William Donaldson and Archibald Bell, all of the victims are buried in the Tambo cemetery. The crash occurred on 24th March 1927 when the bi-plane was on a regular run from Charleville to Cloncurry
Being the oldest town in the Central West the Tambo Cemetery has a wealth of history. The cemetery is located across the Barcoo River and situated on a rise so it overlooks the town. Unfortunately because of fire Council only has records which commence in October 1903. Please do not hesitate to contact the Council Office if you require any information regarding burials within the area
Tambo Dam was once the towns water supply and was built by horse drawn scoop. The town now uses the Great Artesian Basin for its' water supply. The lake has become a recreational area for locals and visitors alike. It is a great place to relax and have that friendly picnic or barbecue. There are free barbecues available. So take the time out, relax, stop for a while and enjoy the profusion of birdlife found around the water
While you are exploring the town and enjoying the beautiful gardens don't forget to call in and visit Tambo Teddies. These very appealing bears are locally made from sheepskin and filled with wool. Each bear is numbered and has a district property included in his or her name. They come in different styles from the "bickie" bear for the very littlies to the fully dressed stockmen with his stock whip and swag. So call in and see these unique bears being created, however be prepared to lose your heart to these very cute cuddly bears. There really is one there who will want to travel with you
