Over the first weekend in June, the 3-Day Mega Sports Clinic in Tambo and Blackall brought together close to 100 young people from across the region for an action-packed program of sport, learning and connection.
The clinic began with a school visit to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, where Olympians and coaches met with local students before participants gathered for registration and the official launch of the program. Excitement was high as young athletes from across the region came together for a weekend designed to build skills, confidence and friendships.
The program featured an outstanding line-up of elite athletes and coaches, including Australian Paralympian and elite athletics coach William Howard, who shared his experiences competing at the highest level and inspired participants to pursue their goals both on and off the field. Three-time Olympian and Olympic medallist Mitch Larkin also joined the clinic, drawing on his experiences representing Australia at the London, Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games to encourage the next generation of regional athletes.
The evening welcomed coaches, university representatives and Olympians, who introduced themselves and outlined their roles across the program. Participants received an overview of the clinic before enjoying a shared dinner and an engaging question-and-answer session to close out the first day.
Day 2 began early at 7.00am and delivered a full schedule of sporting activities, including Rugby League, Hockey and Athletics. Beyond the sporting program, participants and their families also had the opportunity to learn about topics such as athlete nutrition, sporting pathways and the challenges and opportunities facing young people in sport.
The Country Universities Centre delivered information sessions for parents and students, highlighting future education opportunities and pathways available to regional young people. Meanwhile, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) team brought advanced sports science technology to the clinic, giving every participant the opportunity to experience equipment and techniques used in high-performance sport.
On Day 3, participants travelled to Tambo for tennis and cricket before returning to Blackall for a swimming session led by an Olympian. The day concluded with presentations and a shared dinner, celebrating achievements, personal growth and the strong friendships formed throughout the weekend. Recognition was also given to participants through the Sportsgirl and Sportsboy of the Weekend awards.
The final day included a visit to Blackall State School, providing one last opportunity to connect with local students and highlight the important role that sport, education and healthy lifestyles play in regional communities.
The 3-Day Mega Sports Clinic was made possible through the commitment of coaches, volunteers, Olympians, university partners and staff who generously contributed their time, knowledge and energy. Most importantly, the enthusiasm, determination and positive attitude shown by the young people involved helped make the program a resounding success.
The clinic provided much more than sporting instruction. It offered participants the chance to learn from elite athletes, explore future education opportunities, develop healthy habits, build confidence and create lasting friendships.
Blackall-Tambo Regional Council extends its gratitude to all coaches, volunteers, Olympians, university partners, staff, parents and participants whose enthusiasm, commitment and support made the 3-Day Mega Sports Clinic a resounding success. Their contribution helped create an inspiring weekend of sport, learning and opportunity for young people across the region.
