Welcome to the Blackall-Tambo region! Whether you’ve recently moved to the area or are settling in for a longer stay, this page is designed to help you get set up, find essential services, and connect with your local community.
Community Hubs, Libraries and Visitor Information Centres
Our two townships are supported by community hubs, libraries, and visitor information centres (VICs) that bring together essential services, information, and social spaces for both newcomers, locals and travellers. These locations are a great place to start when you are new to the region.
Community Hubs
The Blackall Visitor Information Centre is located within the Blackall Community Hub and Library in the centre of town. This space provides information about local attractions and events, along with registration for the Queensland library network, and connection to public health options and associated services.

In Tambo, the Tambo Visitor Information Centre operates from the historic Tambo Courthouse within the Heritage Precinct. The building also houses the Tambo Library, creating a shared space for learning, information, and community connection.

Health and emergency services
Health services are available through local hospitals, health centres and visiting practitioners across the region. Both townships also have local police stations, fire stations, and state emergency services (SES) branches. New residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the nearest facilities and after-hours services.

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council provides waste disposal facilities and kerbside collection services for residents in Blackall and Tambo.

Pets and animals
If you are moving to the region with pets, dogs must be registered with Council and all animals must be kept in accordance with local animal management requirements. In rural areas, responsible pet ownership is especially important due to livestock, open spaces and neighbouring properties.

Local businesses are an important part of life in Blackall and Tambo, providing essential goods and services including groceries, retail, fuel, trades and professional support. Residents and visitors are encouraged to shop locally where possible, helping to support the regional economy and maintain services across both towns.

Getting around the region
Our region is often called the "centre of the Outback" and is the perfect place to settle in while exploring the wider region. Blackall and Tambo are serviced by airports (see QANTAS), coach (see Greyhound) and even links into rail connections (see Spirit of the Outback, Longreach-Brisbane) - all allowing you to connect to major centres across Queensland.
When driving, distances between towns and services can be significant, so planning ahead is important. While roads are generally well maintained, conditions can change quickly after rainfall, particularly on rural and unsealed roads. Council provides access to a regional emergency dashboard for updates on flooding, road conditions, fuel supplies, and other incidents that may affect travel or safety.

Mobile Coverage
The Blackall-Tambo Region is primarily a Telstra-only coverage area, with limited or no service available from most other providers – even in town. Visitors relying on Optus, Vodafone or some Telstra wholesale providers may experience little to no reception throughout much of the region.
New residents are encouraged to consider purchasing (and activating) a Telstra sim card for mobile phones before moving to the area.
