Our Region
Blackall-Tambo is located in the heart of Queensland's Outback approximately 900km north west of Brisbane. The region comprises of two towns of Blackall and Tambo which lie along the historic Barcoo River on the Landsborough Highway (Matilda Way). Blackall is an attractive vibrant town with a population of approximately 1500 people. The town of Tambo is a jewel in the west with a population of 600.
The Blackall-Tambo region has an extensive history of cattle, sheep and wool production. Australia's famous shearer, Jackie Howe lived and worked in our area. The region's economy has diversified into other industries including cypress pine sawmilling and tourism which has been a solid base for retail and general services.
The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council was formally created in March 2008 as part of a state government amalgamation reform. Council is comprised of the former Blackall and Tambo Shire Councils, with the main office located in Blackall. The Council is dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the appealing rural lifestyle within the region by the provision of high quality services and facilities and through a collaborative and supportive community environment.
The region provides a range of services and programs for our youth, our seniors and families. Quality facililties are available to support our many community organisations to provide a wide range of sport and recreation activities including horse racing, bowls, tennis, swimming and equestrian. The region's strong volunteer base has been and continues to play an important part in the life of both communities and reflect the high level of community spirit that exists across the region
Visiting our area offers the opportunity to learn about the history of our communities through a range of attractions, including the Blackall Woolscour, the Beyond the Black Stump display, Jackie Howe memorial, the Tambo Heritage precinct and other historical and cultural sites. The Blackall Artesian Pool and Spa allows visitors to experience the therapeutic benefits of artesian water and is a great place to rest and relax
Our region is also know for the famous Tambo Teddies, where you can visit the Teddies' workshop and see these creatures come alive. Within our region's vast open area visitors will see great diversity from flat open down plains to cliff lines, dry gorges of the Great Dividing Range, water holes along the scenic Barcoo River and the Salvator Rosa National Park
