Our Region

Located in the heart of Queensland’s Outback, the Blackall-Tambo Region spans more than 30,000 square kilometres and is home to the townships of Blackall and Tambo, surrounded by grazing properties and families.

The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council was formally created in March 2008 as part of a Queensland Government amalgamation reform. Council was formed through the merger of the former Blackall and Tambo Shire Councils, with the main Council office located in Blackall.

Connected by the Landsborough Highway (Matilda Way) and the historic Barcoo River, the region offers the opportunity to enjoy a connected rural lifestyle with access to essential services, strong community networks and space to live, work and grow.

Blackall-Tambo offers a welcoming regional lifestyle supported by quality services, community facilities and opportunities for residents of all ages.

The region provides:

  • Two primary schools and a State School offering education through to Year 12
  • Early childhood education and care services, including childcare and kindergarten
  • Modern health services including the new Blackall Hospital and Clinic, opened in 2020
  • A growing aged care sector, including the regionally recognised McLean Place aged care facility
  • Sporting facilities, community groups and local events that support an active and connected lifestyle

With a strong volunteer culture and close-knit communities, residents have the opportunity to become involved, contribute and build lasting connections.

The Blackall-Tambo economy has deep roots in agriculture, with cattle, sheep and wool production continuing to play an important role in the region.

Today, the region is supported by diverse industries including agriculture, tourism, transport, retail, trades, professional services and emerging opportunities in value-adding industries.

Council continues to support regional growth through investment in infrastructure, economic development initiatives and projects that create opportunities for the future, including:

  • The Blackall Cultural Precinct — a major regional development project creating a new community, cultural and visitor asset for the region.
  • Wool processing opportunities through Queensland Wool Processors (QWool), supporting opportunities for local value-adding and industry development.
  • Investment in essential infrastructure and community facilities that support liveability and future growth.

Two unique communities

Blackall and Tambo each offer their own character, experiences and opportunities.

Blackall providing a range of key regional services, facilities and attractions, including the Blackall Hospital and McLean Pleace Aged Care, the Blackall Woolscour, Blackall Aquatic Centre, showgrounds, shopping, parks and future opportunities through major regional projects.

Tambo, recognised as the oldest town in Western Queensland, has a proud history and strong cultural identity. Known for its heritage, creativity and craftsmanship, Tambo is home to attractions including the Tambo Heritage Precinct, Trucking Museum, Grassland Gallery and the famous Tambo Teddies.
