Proposed Electoral Boundary Changes Rejected

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council has welcomed the Queensland Redistribution Commission's decision to reject the proposed changes to the region's state electoral boundaries, following a strong community campaign and comprehensive submissions advocating to retain the existing electorate arrangements.
Earlier this year, the Commission proposed changes that would have altered state electoral representation for communities across the Blackall-Tambo region, placing part of the region into a separate electorate. In response, Council opened a community survey and later lodge a series of submissions outlining the importance of maintaining the current boundaries.
Mayor Andrew Martin said the outcome was a testament to what can be achieved when communities, local government and regional representatives work together.
"This is a fantastic result for the people of Blackall-Tambo," Mayor Martin said.
"From the outset, we believed there was no compelling case for changing the boundaries that have long represented our communities and regional interests so effectively. The Commission has carefully considered the evidence presented and agreed that the existing arrangements should remain."
Mayor Martin thanked everyone who contributed to the successful campaign.
"This outcome belongs to our community. Thank you to every resident who took the time to make a submission and have their voice heard. The number of individual submissions received from our region demonstrated just how strongly our community felt about protecting its representation."
"I also want to acknowledge Council's Chief Executive Officer, Mike Lollback, who dedicated an enormous amount of time to preparing Council's submission, as well as my fellow Councillors for their support throughout the process."
Mayor Martin also thanked neighbouring councils, fellow RAPAD Mayors and local State Members and candidates who advocated on behalf of the region.
"We appreciate the support of Ann Leahy MP, Sean Dillon and Nikki Boyd, along with our fellow RAPAD Mayors, who all recognised the importance of maintaining sensible regional representation and supported our position throughout the review."
The Commission's final decision means the Blackall-Tambo region will remain within its current state boundaries of the Gregory electorate.
