Blackall-Tambo Regional Council is progressing plans for a new sewerage treatment plant in Blackall, with key milestones already achieved and construction on track for completion in late 2027.

Funding for the project was announced in 2025 at the Better in Blackall Festival, where Member for Warrego and Minister for Local Government and Water and Minister for Disaster Recovery and Volunteers, the Honourable Ann Leahy, committed $4.5 million toward the development. Council has since contributed an additional $500,000, bringing the total project budget to $5 million.

In January 2026, Council called for tenders for the design and project management of the new plant. The successful contractor, The Water & Carbon Group, was appointed following the February Council meeting, having demonstrated strong capability and value for money.

Site investigations were carried out in March, with contractors working alongside Council staff to assess current operations and explore suitable upgrade options.

The new facility will replace the town’s existing treatment plant, to ensure that a robust system for decades to come. The plant is being designed to meet Queensland regulatory requirements, operate sustainably, and withstand the climatic conditions of Western Queensland.

Further updates are expected later in the year.
